What is Tax Abatement?
Tax abatement is the process by which any
person or entity “aggrieved” by reason of paying property tax,
legally challenges the tax assessment for the property. If you
believe that your property tax assessment is greater than the market
value of your property, or that it is unfair based upon a comparison
of other properties in your city or town, you may be eligible for
tax abatement.
Who is Eligible for Tax Abatement?
Generally, this is the property owner but it
can be others who have significant ownership/lease interest in the
property may be eligible as well. You have the right to apply for
an abatement each year but you must be an aggrieved party and meet
all timely filing requirements, which are very specific and governed
by statute.
